Description
Eastern Anglepod, AKA Angle Pod, or Angularfruit is one of 200 species of milkvine and member of the family Apocynaceae. The same family as milkweed. The Genus and species also has many synonyms. Matalea gonocarpa, Gonolobus suberosus, Gonolobus gonocarpus, Cynanchum suberosum to name a few. Confused? Yeah, me too. Regardless this is a fascinating milkvine. Not just the shape of the seed pods or the dark purple and green flowers but even the seeds are unique.
This species is native to the Southeast and has flowers with dark purple centers and green petal tips. The large seed pods are sharply fluted and angular, hence the name. Does well in full sun or part shade, moderate moisture and when found in the wild it likes to be at the sunny edge of woods. Can climb to 15 feet.
Perennial in native states. Annual in zones 6 and below.
Native to: AL, AR, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MO, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA
