Description
Asclepias viridis commonly called Green Antelopehorn, Green Milkweed, or Green Spider Milkweed. Southeastern US and Mexico native. It is a perennial plant that tends to be short growing only 12-18″ tall. Multiple stems often emerge from the root ball. Clustered greenish-yellow flowers with maroon highlights sit on top of the leaning stem. It blooms from April through June. Habitat: Dry areas, prairies, pastures, glades, ditches, disturbed ground, limestone soils. Roots: Taproot. Toxicity: Low. Maintenance: Low.
Cold stratification may increase germination rates on fresher seeds. Surface sow in Spring when the ground has warmed above 60 degrees and all danger of frost has passed. Seeds can also be started inside 6-8 weeks prior to planting outside when the ground has warmed.
