Description
A Mix of both Pink and White Asclepias Incarnata, Swamp Milkweed is a beautiful milkweed that does well with wet feet, hence the name. If you have a low-lying area that gets soggy during the rainy season this is a good milkweed to plant. Mature plants will be 3.5′ – 4.5′ with many smaller leaves to feed dozens of caterpillars. The white or pink blooms are bright enough to attract many Monarchs for the nectar and prime egg laying spots.
Sowing. Cold stratification of this species is optional. Soak seeds for 24-48 hours prior to sowing the following spring when the ground has warmed above 60 degrees and all danger of frost has passed. This is recommended over Fall sowing because a lot of things can happen to those little seeds over the winter. Milkweed seeds need 3 main conditions met to germinate: light, moisture and warmth. You can also start these indoors 6-8 weeks prior to planting out, for more details visit my blog. Germination rates for these seeds started indoors is 92%. Can be water germinated.
Growing. Keep well watered the first year. A well established plant will still prefer to be kept moist. The original plant will not spread via roots like the Common M. but will self-seed and I’ve found those seedlings can be transplanted while young.
Native to all continental US states except: AZ, CA, MS, OR, WA.
